The Hong Kong Institute of Allergy was founded in 1996, by a group of Allergists, Chest Physicians, Paediatricians and Dermatologists, to promote the discipline of allergy. Founding members included the late Dr. Avery Chan, Dr. Helen Chan, Dr. Jane Chan, Dr. Chan Ka-ho, Dr. Christopher Lai, Dr. John Leung, the late Dr. William Yip, Dr. Donald Yu, Dr. Yu Hip-cho, Dr. Patrick Yuen and Professor William Wei.
Since then, the Hong Kong Institute of Allergy has admitted many more members and associate members making it a 400 members community.
Hong Kong Institute of Allergy aims to promote the awareness of allergic diseases among medical professionals and the public, to bring cutting edge knowledge on management of allergic diseases to the medical community in Hong Kong, and to improve the well being of patients suffering from allergy.
To achieve this, HKIA has organized many medical symposia and public talks over the past 19 years. Among them, the most successful medical symposia are the ones held in conjunction with the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.
Since 1998, the Hong Kong Allergy Convention has been held bi-annually at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, attracting local and international attendees to learn from world renowned allergists, whose lectures cover the most recent advances on the management and treatment of allergy and asthma. Coming October 2014, the 8th Hong Kong Allergy Convention will be held. Applications for abstract submission and attendance are now opened.
The HKIA actively participates in many regional and international allergy organizations. It is a member of the World Allergy Organization, and an active participant in the APACCI, as well as an ally with the EAACI and the Japanese Society of Allergology. Needless to say, the close association between the institute and the ACAAI allows them to support each other's activities in Hong Kong and internationally.
The HKIA shall continue to play a more significant role in training physicians in the discipline of Allergy in Hong Kong and to enhance the management of Allergic disease in Hong Kong.
